Welcome to ICKL!
The International Circle of Korean Linguistics (ICKL) is a scholarly organization dedicated to the promotion of awareness of, the dissemination of information about, and the facilitation of communication among those in the field of, Korean language and linguistics. It was founded on October 20, 1975, and starting from 1977, it has been holding an international conference around the world every two years.
After the 19th meeting of the ICKL international conference in 2015, the Harvard ISOKL (Harvard International Symposium on Korean Linguistics), which had been holding a biennial conference at Harvard University since 1985, has been merged with the ICKL. The merger was completed in July 27, 2016.
The 20th meeting of the ICKL international conference, held in 2017 at the University of Helsinki, Finland, was the first meeting of the ICKL international conference since the merger.

제22회 국제한국언어학회가 2021년 8월 17일부터 18일까지 타이완 Taipei에서 개최될 예정이었으나 COVID-19으로 인해 취소되고 대신 한국외국어대학교의 가상 컨퍼런스 플랫폼을 사용하여 디지탈 형식으로 개최됨. 70여 편의 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 22nd ICKL was originally scheduled to be held in Taipei, Taiwan, from August 17 to 18, 2021. However, due to COVID-19, it was canceled and instead held in a digital format using the virtual conference platform of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Over 70 papers were presented, and Conference Proceedings were published.
2019
2019년 7월 10일부터 12일까지 호주 Melbourne, Monash대학교에서 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 21st ICKL conference was held in July 10-12, 2019 in Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
2017
2017년 6월 27일부터 29일까지 핀란드 헬싱키대학교에서 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 20th ICKL conference was held in June 27-29, 2017 in Helsinki University of Helsinki, Finland.

2015년 7월 24일부터 26일까지 미국 일리노이주 시카고대학교(University of Chicago, Illinois)에서 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 19th ICKL conference will be held in July 24-26, 2015 in Chicago, IL, USA. This event will be the first joint meeting with the Harvard (Biennial) International Symposium on Korean Linguistics
2012
중국 장쑤성 쉬저우대학교(Xuzhou University, Jiangsu Province)에서 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 18th ICKL was held at Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.
2010
2010년 7월 6일부터 8일까지 몽골 울란바토르의 인문대학에서 40여 편의 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics IV도 발간함.
The 17th ICKL was held at University of Humanities in Mongolia during July 6 through 8, 2010 and 40 papers were presented at the conference. Later conference proceedings were published. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics IV also appears.
2008
2008년 8월 3일부터 5일까지 미국 코넬대학교에서 구결학회와 공동으로 80여 편의 논문을 발표하고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
The 16th ICKL was held at Cornell University in the USA during August 3 though 5, 2008 and 80 papers were presented at the conference. Later conference proceedings were published.
2007
2007년 6월 20일부터 21일까지 홍콩 성시대에서 열린 International Conference on Korean Language, Culture, and Society 대회에서 15편의 논문을 발표하였고, Conference Proceedings를 발간함.
At the 4th Interim Meeting of ICKL hosted by City University of Hong Kong, 15 papers were presented and the conference proceedings were compiled.
2006
제15회 국제한국언어학회가 멕시코 합중국 과달라하라에서 개최됨. 과달라하라 대학과 공동으로 주최하여 7월 10일부터 13일까지 100여 명의 학자가 참가하여 58편의 논문을 발표. Korean Linguistics 13권 발간. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics II 발간.
The 15th International Conference on Korean Linguistics was held in Quadalajara, Mexico, with 54 paper presenters and 80 participants. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 13 appears. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics II also appears.
2005
정기 학회 중간의 홀수해에도 작은 모임을 갖도록 하는 것뿐만 아니라, 학회 창립 30주년을 기념하여 인도 공화국 뉴델리의 네루 대학교에서 창립기념 국제학술대회를 개최함. (30th Anniversary Conference of International Circle of Korean Linguistics, October 8, 2005, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi). 10월 8일, 30여 명의 학자가 참가하여 15편의 논문을 발표. 한국 내 회원들의 용이한 참석을 위하여 학회 창립 30주년을 또 한 번 기념하며, 대한민국 서울의 서울대학교에서 창립기념 국내학술대회를 개최. 10월 22일, 50여 명의 학자가 참가하여 회고를 겸한 기념사를 포함해 10편의 논문을 발표. 이 논문들과 터키, 인도의 논문들을 모아 국제한국언어학회 창립 30주년 기념논문집 ‘촘스키의 최소주의 이론 및 최적성 이론의 한국어에의 적용’ (Chomsky’s Minimalist Program and OT applied to Korean)을 발간함.
To hold a small mid-term conference between the biennial conferences, and also to celebrate the 30th anniversary of ICKL there were two meetings in October 2005. The first one was organized as ICKL-JNU New Delhi International Conference on Korean Linguistics, 8 October and ICKL-SNU Seoul International Conference on Korean Linguistics, 22 October.

2003
이상억 회장은 회원들의 요청에 따라, 짝수년에만 개최해 오던 정기 학회 중간의 홀수해에도 작은 모임을 갖기로 하여, 과거 회원들이 2년마다 만남으로 인해 소원해지던 관계를 좀 더 긴밀하게 하기로 하였다. 이에 따라 국제한국언어학회의 첫 번째 중간 모임인 ICKL-TUB International Conference on Korean &/or Corpus Linguistics를 독일 베를린 과학기술대학(Technical University at Berlin)에서 2003년 7월 21일부터 22일까지 개최함. 40명 이상의 학자가 참가하여 25편의 논문을 발표.
Sang-Oak Lee proposed to hold a small mid-term conference between the biennial conferences, since there were concerns that its members were becoming unfamiliar because the regular meeting is held every even-numbered year. Then he organized the first interim meeting: ICKL-TU Berlin International Conference on Korean &/or Corpus Linguistics, 21-22 July 2003.
2002

300명 이상의 정회원, 즉 회비를 납부하는 회원을 확보. 거의 모든 정회원이 박사학위 소지자이거나 대학원생임. 제8회 국제한국언어학회가 워싱턴 D.C.의 조지워싱턴대학교(George Washington University)와 공동으로 개최됨. 한국어 표기 체계에 대한 특별 학회를 구성하고, 특별 학회에서 15편의 초청 논문을 발표하며, 일반 학회에서 62편의 논문을 발표함. 특별 강연회와 학회에 130명 이상이 참석. 학회와 더불어 “세종대왕: 15세기 한국의 빛”이라는 제목의 특별 전시회도 개최. 소식지 제6호, 제7호, 제8호, 제9호 발간. There are more than 300 members in good standing, i.e., those who have paid their current membership dues. Almost all of them are Ph.D. holders or advanced graduate students. The 8th International Conference on Korean Linguistics is co-hosted by The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. A special symposium on the Korean Writing System is organized for the conference. In addition to 15 invited papers presented at the special symposium on the Korean writing system, there are 62 papers in the general session. Over 130 participate in the Conference and Symposium. Concurrent with the conference, a special exhibit on King Sejong the Great: The Light of Fifteenth Century Korea is presented at GW. Newsletter, Numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9 are produced. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 7 appears.

소식지 제4호와 제5호를 재발간하기 시작함. [제3호 이후 소식들은 학회장의 편지 형태로 전달되었으며, 학회장은 평균 4~5번의 소식지를 발송했음.]
Newsletter is revived with Number 4 and 5. [NB: Since the issue number 3, news went out in the form of presidents' letters. Each president of the Circle sent about four or five messages on average.]
1990
제7회 국제한국언어학회가 오사카 경제법과대학과 공동으로 개최됨. 100명 이상의 참석자가 참여하여 59편의 논문을 발표함. Korean Linguistics 6권 발간. 제7회 ICKL 학회 발표 논문집(Proceedings) 출판.
The Seventh International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by the Osaka University of Economics and Law. Fifty nine papers were presented to an audience of more than one hundred. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 6 and The 7th ICKL, proceedings of the conference, are published.

제6회 국제한국언어학회가 캐나다 토론토대학교(Toronto University)와 공동으로 개최됨. 80여 명이 참석하고, 61편의 논문을 발표함. Korean Linguistics 5권 발간. 제6회 ICKL 학회 발표 논문집(Proceedings) 출판.

북미한국언어학회를 조직하기 위한 특별 준비 회의의 회장인 알래스카대학교 구장회(Dr. Jang (John) H. Koo)가 10월 20일자 공지를 통해 학회 결성을 발표함. 19명의 회원으로 시작하여 곧 27명으로 증가함.
Dr. Jang (John) H. Koo of University of Alaska, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for organization of a Korean Linguistic Circle of North America, announces completion of the organization by letter to the membership, dated October 20. The Circle started with nineteen members, soon increased to twenty seven.
